It was surely only a matter of time before the marketing potential and player personality found their way down to the Rugby Boot.

This has been coming for some time, and it feels a little like a quaint past-time when we think about the talk that was associated with the white boot phenomenon that made its first witness on the field.

It goes without saying that rugby is a very uniform sport.

This tends to be the case when there are groups of people… teams… of combatants involved.  While all look mostly the same from the neck down, we are now witnessing the rise of the rugby “accessory” for every aspiring rugby individual… that is; if you’re good enough.

Players can and do have names, numbers, and assorted paraphernalia attached to the colour of their choice; taking the “accessorising” to the next level.

Following the culture of Rugby, this tends to be more of the domain of the pretty boys in the Backs.

I say, tends, as the Loose-Forwards definitely have it in them, and I am waiting for the day when a counter-culture, Front-Row Forward, decides to provide more appeal than a grizzled and bearded look, and go all the way.

For an example of a dichotomy between Forwards and Backs; take a look at the boots in this Image of the Crusaders v Bulls, in SupeRugby, Timaru-style, from the weekend.

Take note of the position of each of the players.

We have SBW in Green; Bjorn Basson in Red; Jaco Pretorius in Yellow; Matt Berquist [behind SBW] in Red… and Kieran Read, running back in the distance, in mostly, Black!

Personally; I like the individuality, colour, and expression of this freedom to boot, and if you have witnessed much of this blog… not to mention, any other… in the iamjonnyking arsenal; this should come as no surprise!

In another sporting context; I remember when Chris Cairns wore red boots to match his Canterbury One-Day Cricket Uniform, with the authorities, not best pleased!

Viewing Morne Morkel’s boots, when batting in the IPL, there does seem to be more freedom in Cricket!  Well, at least in a certain context.

In rugby, this is reasonably new, and fashion is want to go in circles, but these bright ideas will be around for your viewing pleasure for a good while longer.

Even in the context of the boot, there is plenty of room to move, as the interaction of colours, materials, and design is further pushed out by those who want to see more of their own personal expression on the field.
